Learning outcomes: The aim of this course is to help students become proficient academic writers by developing all aspects of their academic writing, building on the foundation provided by AWS.
Content: The course covers various aspects of writing including the process of writing, using appropriate academic style, significant grammatical areas of difficulty for Finnish students, academic vocabulary and the conventions and requirements of academic writing in English. The topics of writing exercises include business and economics subjects related to the interests of students. The course is intended primarily for Business and Economics students, but others including international students are very welcome to apply to attend.
Learning Material: Materials will be supplied by the lecturer either as handouts for class work (which must be paid for by students) or by posting them on the course website.
Degree / Programme: Economics and Business Administration, Masters level
Point in time: Autumn Year 4-5
Teaching / Learning methods: Lectures 24 h, One-to-One Teaching 1 h, Independent Study 30 h. Details: Instruction (24 h) will consist of lecturing, group discussions, peer evaluation and individual consultations, in which students will discuss with the Course Lecturer their development as writers. Students will do regular writing and other exercises: 1) class / homework exercises on aspects of structure style and language; and 2) essay writing exercises on relevant topics
Teaching Languages: English. Details: Exchange students and others whose first language is not Finnish are very welcome to join the course.
Conduct: Assessment is based on 1) full attendance and active participation in the course (min. 18/24h); 2) attendance at an individual consultation on progress; and 3) performance in the assessed essays
Assessment: 0 (Fail) - 5 (Excellent)
Prerequisites: This course should be taken by Business students after completing Reading for Academic Purposes, Academic and Professional English and Academic Writing Skills.
