Abbreviation: APE/HO 
Learning outcomes: To encourage participants to develop their own oral English skills and confidence in using English, in particular for health education and nursing science purposes
Content: Small-group discussion on relevant academic and professional topics, such as health education and management issues, the Finnish health care system, and cross-cultural communication in the health system; also role-play exercises e.g. patient consultations, class and home exercises on pronunciation and vocabulary, and writing exercises.
Learning Material: Materials will be supplied by the lecturer either as handouts for class work (which must be paid for by students) or by posting on the course website.

Point in time: Year 1 autumn
Teaching / Learning methods: Lectures 14 h, Independent Study 13 h. Details: 1) Pair / group discussion / role play exercises based on a variety of academic and professional situations 2) Oral exercises to develop pronunciation and typical health vocabulary 3) Writing exercises to develop vocabulary and practice relevant writing skills
Teaching Languages: English. Details: Exchange students and others whose first language is not Finnish are very welcome to join the course.
Conduct: Assessment is based on: 1) active participation in the whole programme (min. 24h attendance); 2) continuous oral assessment; and 3) completion of writing and other exercises
Assessment: Passed / Fail. Details: Exemption test: if you have studied in English or worked abroad using English for a substantial period, you may be eligible for an exemption test and can apply to Lecturer Vivian Paganuzzi outlining your foreign experience. If you are approved as a candidate for exemption, you will then be invited to demonstrate your ability in English for academic and professional purposes.
Prerequisites: Students must already be able to discuss general topics freely in English (B1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference). If in doubt, they should first improve their oral skills on other courses e.g. through the Open University.
